The Staples Easy Rebate Denial Postcard
I'm just going to come out and say that I don't really like Staples. In my experience their customer service leaves a lot to be desired and they are inconsistent with the way they enforce their policies and coupons, even when it violates the fine print.
Of course on the flip side I shop at Staples quite often because of the ability to get cheap Staples gift cards, 5x with the Chase Ink and their Visa/MC gift card Easy Rebate deals. In fact, one of the bright spots regarding Staples is their Easy Rebate program.
Staples Easy Rebates
The way it works is you go online, enter the code from your receipt and input your information. The system verifies your purchase and what you qualify for and they mail you the rebate within 6-8 weeks. Very easy, until it isn't.
The Rebate Denial
Several people I know including myself received rebate denial postcards this week from Staples.
The postcards say:
"Dear Consumer,
Thank you for participating in the Master Card Gift Cards promotion. Unfortunately, we could not honor your request due to the following reason(s):
- Master Card Gift Cards Missing Purchase Amount
- All required products were not submitted
To resubmit for this offer, you must return this card and any validating information to the address shown on the reverse side by 5/7/2015."
As you can tell this is a bunch of rubbish. How could the Mastercard gift cards be missing the purchase amount? How could I have not submitted all of the information? Remember all I have to do is put in the number from my receipt and their system does the rest.
How To Contact Staples Easy Rebates
Thankfully this has happened to me before. In fact, it happened on 8 kindles that I purchased during the resale deal I wrote about. The easiest way to get this type of situation resolved is to email Staples Rewards. Unfortunately they do not make it easy to find that option.
To contact Staples, head over to the Staples Easy Rebates website and click on FAQ at the very bottom. On the FAQ page you will see a "Contact Us" button. The Contact Us page contains a form you can fill out and a chat option if someone is available. Here is a direct link.
My Resolution
After receiving this postcard the other day I filled out the form requesting that this matter be fixed. Within 48 hours I had received an automated email from Staples Rewards saying that the rebate card had shipped. So they fixed it, but never felt the need to actually email me back about it. Oh Staples and your terrible customer service!
Conclusion
If you ever receive a card like this one for a rebate, simply head to the Contact Us page and let them know what is going on. Chances are it is just a system glitch and that they will fix it right away. Have you received a similar postcard? Let me know in the comments.
